Paolo Carbone received both Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Padova, Padova, Italy, in 1990 and 1994, respectively. From 1994 to 1997, he was a Researcher with the Third University of Rome. From 1997 to 2002, he was first a Researcher and then an Associate Professor with the University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy. Since 2002, he has been a Full Professor with the University of Perugia, where he teaches courses in Instrumentation and Measurement and in Statistical Signal Processing. He has been involved in various research projects, sponsored by private and public funds. He has authored/coauthored more than 250 papers, appeared in international journals and conference proceedings. He is an IEEE Fellow and was the President of the IEEE Systems Council (2016-17). Since 2018, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Measurement, and since 2021, the IMEKO President Elect.



ONE-BIT ESTIMATION

 With the rapid increase in the electrification of mobility and the widening of space applications, a reduction of complexity in making measurements allows for more extensive usage of instruments, increased reliability, and lower energy consumption. This talk explores the possibility of using one-bit ADCs, e.g., analog comparators, to obtain and extract information from analog data based on their one-bit version. The challenge is to reconstruct the analog signal using one-bit data without the usual bandwidth-related assumptions of DS converters.  

 This talk will show how to reconstruct the behavior of structured analog signals based on one-bit processing with and without the usage of assistive signals. One-bit measurements may find applications in distributed measuring and estimation networks, in the areas of telecommunication, testing, analog-built-in self-test circuits, and system identification. Examples are presented concerning the acquisition of high-frequency signals and the measurement of the impedance of rechargeable batteries.
