The 38th edition of the International Conference on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (ICAME) and the International Conference on Hyperfine Interactions and Their Applications (HYPERFINE) was held in Gdańsk, Poland, between 7th and 12th September 2025. The conference was organized by the Lublin University of Technology, The Henryk Niewodniczański Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences Kraków, Gdańsk University of Technology and AGH University of Kraków.

The detailed program included 33 scientific sessions (ICAME – 21, HYPERFINE – 11), 3 tutorial sessions, a commemorative session, a company session, as well as the social events (welcome party, excursion, conference dinner). The first and last days were common for both parts of the conference; for three days the sessions were organized in parallel. There was a total of 220 participants, 146 of whom were regular ICAME participants and 55 – regular HYPERINE participants. The number of accompanying persons – 19, and the number of canceled participants – 31.

Opinions about the conference

The new joint format of ICAME/HYPERFINE in Gdańsk has demonstrated real synergies, with a joint opening, joint keynotes, and coordinated sessions that naturally brought together the synchrotron, Mössbauer, μSR, PAC, and laser spectroscopy communities. Joint poster sessions and a common closing ceremony led to an intensive exchange between both groups. Thematically coordinated days - from synchrotron and operando methods to planetary materials and advanced local probes - excellently demonstrated complementary strengths. Building on this momentum, future joint conferences that feature software/data workshops and topical parallel sessions could go even further to deepen the integration of the two conferences.

Ralf Röhlsberger,

Chair of the International Board on the Application of the Mössbauer Effect

“The HYPERFINE community greatly enjoyed this joint conference. During its formal meeting on site, the International Advisory Committee of the HYPERFINE series noted several observations and recommendations to substantiate this positive impression. Bringing ICAME and HYPERFINE together clearly increased overall participation, contributed to the enthusiastic atmosphere at the event, and created valuable opportunities for new contacts. Attendees from both communities were able to visit each other’s sessions and mingle during coffee breaks and dinners. To encourage even more cross-fertilization in future editions, we suggest labeling sessions by topic rather than by conference series. Hosting the meeting in the same hotel where many participants stayed also enabled smooth logistics. Overall, the local organization was excellent -- efficient, dedicated, and warmly delivered.”

Stefaan Cottenier,

Chair of the International Advisory Committee of the HYPERFINE

“The conference has concluded. It's time to summarize. I'd like to do so using the late Professor Hendrik de Waard's definition of an „ideal conference”. At the Hyperfine Interactions conference, he organized in 1983 in Groningen, he said that the ideal conference was one organized by the Dutch, taught by the British, and financed by the Germans. Although the ICAME & HYPERFINE 2025 conference didn't meet any of these three criteria, it can, in my opinion, be considered an ideal conference. My congratulations to the organizers!”

During the ICAME & HYPERFINE 2025 conference, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the International Conference on Mössbauer Spectroscopy, which was held in 1975 in Kraków. The Polish Mössbauer spectroscopy has a long-standing and internationally recognized tradition dating back to the sixties of XX century and Professor Andrzej Hrynkiewicz. Our family tree below illustrates our tradition.
