
Jerzy Andrzej Sładek - engineer, metrologist, professor of technical sciences, full professor of the Krakow University of Technology, specialist in coordinate metrology, metrology in manufacturing processes, process automation - Metrology 4.0. Author and co-author of more than 400 scientific works, dozens of manuscripts in A-list journals, and 3 books (including Coordinate Metrology - Springer Verlag -2016). He has promoted 14 doctoral students in technical sciences. Member of the Machine Building Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years: 1993-1996 head of the Independent Laboratory of Automated Quality Assurance Systems, 1996-1997 head of the Department of Metrology and Technical Control, 1997-1998 deputy director of the Institute of Machine Technology and Production Automation, 2004-2013 head of the Coordinate Metrology Laboratory (since 2010 operating as a PCA accredited calibration laboratory). He initiated the establishment of the Industrial Design Engineering major at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with the Faculty of Industrial Forms at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Since 2016 he has been the dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Cracow University of Technology. He was the initiator of the National Coordinate Metrology Network – NSMET, established in 2021, uniting Polish universities of technology in the research network on a global scale.
At the turn of the 80s and 90s he founded and managed two innovative metrology engineering companies: Bipropol Sp. z o.o. and Metronom GmbH. Both achieved significant market success and were acquired by large foreign business entities. Since 1996 he has chaired the Supervisory Board of the International Foundation for the Promotion of Advanced Technologies. He was one of the authors of the Cracow Special Economic Zone and in the years 1997-2003 he was a member of its Management Board, Vice-President of the Centre of Advanced Technologies - a Company of the State Treasury (currently the Cracow Technology Park) introducing such key investors as Motorola, Comarch, Linde, MAN. Since 2015 member of the Programme Council of the Open Eyes Economy Summit.
COORDINATE METROLOGY - ACCURACY AND SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT
The lecture on coordinate metrology discusses its origins, scientific area, application, and the role it still plays in the development of modern industry and, more recently, the media. Coordinate metrology is a consequence of the development first of length and angle metrology and then of geometric quantities. It emphasized not only the possibility of measuring spatial objects, by determining the coordinates of points and pixel imaging from nano to macro dimensions. Recently coordinate metrology has also been developing in the area of media, medical diagnostics and, of course, modern automated and robotic industry (in-line metrology), creating four-dimensional metrology (4D Metrology). The extremely important role of coordinate metrology in the area of the so-called Industry 4.0 (Industry 4.0 Big Data of Measurements, IoP) was also noted. The difficult and important issue of system and measurement accuracy was also raised. In terms of the accuracy of coordinate measuring systems, the need to redefine this assessment from the current error of indication of the measured length towards the error of indication of the measuring point was noted. This involves the construction and maintenance of a standard of indirect measures for coordinate measurements. Such a standard has been developed and is maintained at the accredited, calibrating Coordinate Metrology Laboratory of the Krakow University of Technology in the form of a reference measuring machine, a laser tracker and ensuring the stability of the reference temperature within ±0.05K. Similarly, in terms of the second area - modern assessment of measurement accuracy (on line) at LMW PK, unique virtual copies (digital twins) of contact and non-contact coordinate measuring machines, as well as laser trackers and measuring arms were developed. The key development significance of the National Coordinate Metrology Network (NSMET), included in the Polish Research Infrastructure Map, as a network integrating the most important national research centers with significant participation of the Central Office of Measures, was also demonstrated.
